Our Family Business
Built on Family
Powered by Community
For nearly 60 years, Ahola has operated as more than a payroll and HR company. We’re a family business serving family businesses. We think long-term, reinvest locally, and care deeply about the communities where we work.
We Understand Family Business
Because We Are One
At Ahola, we know family-owned businesses are different.
The decisions you make are not only about quarterly results. They affect your employees, your customers, your reputation, and often several generations of your family. Every hire matters. Every payroll run matters. Every decision carries personal weight.
We understand that because we have lived it since 1967, when Chet and Rheta Ahola started the company with a simple vision: solve problems, serve the community, and treat people like family. Three generations later, that focus has not changed.
As a family-owned company ourselves, we have spent decades helping other family businesses simplify payroll, strengthen HR operations, and focus on what matters most: growing the business and taking care of their people.
From One Visionary Idea
to a Cousins Consortium
Family businesses don’t just grow. They transform.
Founders (1967–1990s)
Chet and Rheta Ahola started the company as a data processing service for local businesses with a simple vision: solve problems, serve the community, and treat people like family. As the company grew, they brought the next generation into active leadership, building systems and processes designed to last.
Parent/Offspring (1990s–2000s)
The second generation stepped into key roles, learning from their parents while introducing new ideas and modernizing operations. Leadership became more structured; vision remained personal.
Sibling Partnership (2000s–2015)
Multiple siblings brought diverse expertise to the table—operations, technology, sales, and finance. No single leader; instead, a collaborative leadership model that valued different strengths.
Cousins Consortium (2015–Present)
The third generation of Aholas now plays an active role in leadership and strategy. Jeff Ahola (CEO), Scott Ahola (CIO), and Sonya Ahola James (EVP) represent a new phase: multiple generations working together, each bringing generational perspective and specialized expertise.
The Challenges Family Businesses Face
Family-owned companies often run with lean teams and a lot of hats. Owners and leaders carry everything from business development and operations to employee management and compliance, frequently all at once. That can create challenges such as:
- Managing payroll accurately while balancing countless other responsibilities
- Staying current with changing employment laws and regulations
- Recruiting and retaining quality employees in competitive markets
- Creating consistent HR processes as the business grows
- Protecting the culture and values that make the business unique
- Planning for long-term stability and future generations
These are not problems software alone can solve. They call for a trusted partner who understands what it actually takes to run a family business.

A Partner, Not Just a Provider
At Ahola, we take a relationship-first approach. Our clients work with real people who get to know their business, understand their goals, and offer guidance when questions come up. We believe responsive service, personal accountability, and long-term relationships matter just as much as the technology behind them.
Whatever stage your business is in, our team helps you navigate payroll, HR, compliance, benefits administration, time tracking, and workforce management with confidence.
What guides that work are the same values family businesses tend to share:
-
Integrity
-
Accountability
-
Trust
-
Commitment to employees
-
Dedication to customers
-
Long-term thinking
These principles have shaped Ahola for generations, and they shape how we build every partnership.
